EPF`s Anti-Corruption Activities

EPF addressed anti-corruption programming directly several times over recent years. In addition, various areas of its work, such as targeting the enhancement of democracy, freedom of information and expression, good governance, Armenia’s approximation to the EU etc., all include an anti-corruption component. In order to implement its projects more effectively, EPF had to formulate its vision and approach to the issue of corruption in Armenia, its reasons, effectiveness of fighting it and mechanisms to do so.

Discovering Freedom of Expression in Armenia:

The right to Freedom of Expression (FoE) is guaranteed in the Armenian Constitution, but a clear understanding of what FoE is is practically absent here. EPF, with the support of the British Government and USAID, is implementing a project which tries to address complex issues related to FoE: what are citizens “allowed” to say? What is considered acceptable expression, in-cluding in work and family life? EPF seeks to examine, question, and push these boundaries. The project includes qua-litative research on FoE and censorship, production of six do-cumentaries, and a series of talk shows on Yerkir Media TV.

Hetq investigative journalists help to protect natural monument from destruction

“Local authorities are there to take care of natural and historic monuments, not to sit back while destruction and vandalism happens on their watch,” says environmental activist Mariam Sukhudyan with indignation. In October 2007 Mariam and her friends were visiting Garni, a first-century pagan temple in the Kotayq region of Armenia. Near the temple, there is a natural rock formation known as the “symphony of stones.” She witnessed local residents cutting away the unique basalt stones to use as construction material. Mariam took photos of what she saw in Garni, and upon her return to Yerevan posted them on her blog and sent them via emails to several different environmental activists and organizations. Please read more about the case..
